Course Descriptions:

Playwriting – Level I (7 Classes & 1 Public Reading)
This class is designed to take the mystery out of playwriting and provide an introduction to new playwrights. The method of building a play is explored through a variety of exercises. Our focus will be on understanding the tools in basic dramatic structure. The process involves a lot of scene writing, a lot of thinking, a lot of laughing and a lot of learning. Each playwright will have an opportunity to create a 10-minute play that will be presented in a public reading. The class is designed for novices and experienced playwrights, actors and directors alike. No playwrights are expected to begin the class with already completed work. Required Book: THE PLAYWRIGHTS GUIDE by Stuart Spenser.

Playwriting – Level II (7 Classes & 1 Public Reading)
This class is a continuation of the learning in Level I. Although we will still be looking closely at the dramatic structure of the story, we will also focus attention on other aspects of storytelling and the building of a play. There will be a lot of writing, a lot of thinking, some mutual support from other playwrights, a fair amount of laughing, some tasty food at breaks, and a general atmosphere of fun and learning. Each playwright will have a goal of completing a short one-act play that will be presented in a public reading. Playwrights will have the opportunity to hear their work read aloud by actors and prepared by directors. Prerequisite: Playwriting – Level I.

Making a Play Workshop Series (9 Classes & 1 Public Reading)
This workshop is for playwrights who have completed the first draft of a play and want to workshop that play through for a public reading.  This series is focused on feedback and working a script to be ready for submission and production.  This series is open to writers who have completed the Level 1 & 2 classes and others who have completed study in playwriting.

The Collaboration Workshop Series (7 Classes & 1 Public Reading)
This series of workshops is all about collaboration.  If you have ever wondered what it might be like to collaborate on writing a play this is your opportunity.  There isn’t just one way and we’ll explore the variety of ways that you can collaborate with another writer.  Writers will be writing alone, but working with other writers. The structure of this workshop will be similar to a television writer’s room.  And in the end we expect to have a play.  This is for writers who want to explore another way of writing and each should come to this experience with the basic training of playwriting.

Submission and Production Workshop Series (6 Workshop Meetings)
This workshop series is about getting your work produced. Playwrights should come to the workshop with one or more completed play.  We will explore treatments, a pitch, format, what not to do, where and when to submit, creating submissions lists and generally getting organized to do what many of us just don’t get around to well enough.  It doesn’t stop with the writing.

Registration will be complete at the time payment is received. Please send checks to:
